Blackboard is a course management system used campus-wide at NIU. The system allows faculty to post course materials, deliver tests and surveys, hold online discussions, and facilitate many other course-related functions.
You need to request your Blackboard course(s) each semester. You will only be able to request courses if you are the instructor of record in MyNIU.
Note: The request will be processed immediately, and you will receive a confirmation email when it is complete. The course will be in whichever course view you selected; you may convert a course from the Original to Ultra Course View if you change your mind. You cannot revert from Ultra Course View to Original Course View.
When you convert to Ultra Course View, you are first shown a preview mode where you can explore how your course functions before committing to Ultra Course View.
If you do not choose auto availability, you will need to make your course available manually. After the end of the semester, all courses are automatically made private.
You must request a new LMS course each semester.
Announcements are an ideal tool for communicating timesensitive material to students, such as reminders about upcoming due dates or changes to the syllabus.
You can add content to any Course, Module, or Folder by hovering your cursor over the area you would like to add content to an clicking the Plus Icon.
To copy materials from an Original Course to an Ultra Course, use the Course Copy tool in the Original Course. The materials will be copied and converted in a single step.
Note: Status indicators on the Course Content page show the progress of the copy process.
All students who enroll for a course in MyNIU will automatically be added to the Blackboard course. Teaching Assistants must be added manually.
Student Preview allows you to experience a course as your students will to ensure proper function. Your preview student is retained until you manually remove it on the Roster.
Blackboard Messages helps you communicate with persons who are enrolled in the Blackboard course. Messages can be sent to select students, TAs, groups, or an entire class.
Note: If you would like an email copy of your message to be sent you must check the box next to Send an Email Copy.
